Nepal-India Startup Sambad showcases cross-border innovation success, strengthens bilateral Startup collaboration

Kathmandu, February 4: The Nepal-India Chamber of Commerce & Industry (NICCI) hosted the Nepal-India Startup Sambad at The Malla Hotel today, convening policymakers, innovation leaders, media representatives, and emerging startup founders to mark an important milestone in cross-border entrepreneurial collaboration.

The event celebrated the successful completion of the inaugural cohort of the India-Nepal Startup Partnership Network (IN-SPAN), a flagship initiative facilitated by IITM Pravartak Technologies Foundation (IIT Madras) with the support of the Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India. Under the program, 24 Nepali startups participated in an intensive eight-week residency within the IIT Madras innovation ecosystem, gaining access to advanced mentorship, technological guidance, and market exposure.

A significant outcome of the cohort was that nine startups secured exclusive investment and incubation offers from leading Indian incubation platforms - a strong indicator of the rising potential of Nepal’s innovation ecosystem and the value of regional cooperation.

In his welcome address, President of NICCI Sunil KC, reaffirmed the Chamber’s commitment to placing innovation and entrepreneurship at the center of Nepal-India economic engagement. He emphasized that cross-border startup partnerships are essential to enhancing regional competitiveness and driving youth-led economic growth.

Highlighting NICCI’s growing role in the innovation space, vice president of NICCI Kunal Kayal, noted that the next phase of Nepal-India economic relations must be driven by the private sector and powered by innovation. “To institutionalize this momentum, our committee is spearheading the establishment of a Startup Innovation Centre, which will serve as an epicenter connecting all ecosystem stakeholders,” he added.

Delivering the guest remarks, Er. Umesh Kumar Gupta, Executive Director of the Industrial Enterprise Development Institute (IEDI) Nepal, stressed the importance of institutional support, policy alignment, and capacity-building initiatives in nurturing startups into globally competitive enterprises.

A key highlight of the Sambad was the Cohort Reflections Session, where founders shared their experiences from the IIT Madras residency. Participants spoke about access to high-end laboratories, investor engagement opportunities, product refinement support, and exposure to global best practices. Many described the experience as a turning point that helped them move from early-stage development to market-ready innovation.

The program concluded with a media interaction session, allowing journalists and stakeholders to engage directly with founders and ecosystem leaders, reinforcing a culture of transparency and collaborative dialogue in ecosystem development.

Applauding the cohort, vice president of NICCI Gaurav Tayal, described the participating entrepreneurs as “the living bridges of this partnership,” underscoring their role in strengthening innovation ties between Nepal and India.

NICCI reiterated that the Nepal–India Startup Sambad forms part of a broader effort to build a sustainable Industry-Academia-Government collaboration framework that supports startups through policy advocacy, cross-border partnerships, and improved access to capital and technology.

By linking Nepali entrepreneurs with Indian innovation platforms, the initiative aims to accelerate knowledge transfer, promote regional market integration, and position Nepal as an emerging hub for technology-driven enterprise.

काठमाडौंः नेपाल–भारत उद्योग वाणिज्य संघ (निक्की) ले आज नेपाल–भारत स्टार्टअप संवाद आयोजना गर्दै नीति–निर्माताहरू, नवप्रवर्तन क्षेत्रका अगुवाहरू, सञ्चारकर्मीहरू तथा उदाउँदा स्टार्टअप संस्थापकहरूलाई एकै ठाउँमा ल्याएको छ। उक्त कार्यक्रमले सीमापार उद्यमशील सहकार्यमा महत्वपूर्ण कोसेढुंगा तय गर्ने पनि निक्कीले जनाएको छ।

कार्यक्रममा इन्डिया–नेपाल स्टार्टअप पार्टनरशिप नेटवर्क (इन्स्पान) को पहिलो समूहले सफलतापूर्वक भारतमा गरेको अनुभव तथा उपलब्धिलाई विशेष रूपमा सम्मानित गरिएको थियो। यो कार्यक्रम आइआइटिएम प्रबद्र्धक (आइआइटी मद्रास) को सहकार्य तथा भारत सरकारको परराष्ट्र मन्त्रालय को सहयोगमा सम्पन्न भएको थियो। कार्यक्रमअन्तर्गत २४ नेपाली स्टार्टअपहरूले आइआइटी मद्रासको नवप्रवर्तन इकोसिस्टममा आठ हप्ते सघन आवासीय कार्यक्रममा सहभागिता जनाउँदै मार्गदर्शन, प्राविधिक सहयोग तथा बजार पहुँचका अवसर प्राप्त गरेका थिए।

यस समूहको उल्लेखनीय उपलब्धिका रुपमा नौ स्टार्टअपहरूले भारतका अग्रणी इनक्युबेशन प्लेटफर्महरूबाट विशेष लगानी तथा इनक्युबेशन प्रस्ताव प्राप्त गरेका छन्। जसले नेपालको नवप्रवर्तन इकोसिस्टमको बढ्दो सम्भावना र क्षेत्रीय सहकार्यको महत्वलाई स्पष्ट संकेत गर्छ।

स्वागत मन्तव्यमा निक्कीका अध्यक्ष सुनील केसीले नवप्रवर्तन र उद्यमशीलतालाई नेपाल–भारत आर्थिक सहकार्यको केन्द्रमा राख्ने प्रतिबद्धता पुनः दोहोर्‍याए। उनले सीमापार स्टार्टअप साझेदारीहरू क्षेत्रीय प्रतिस्पर्धात्मकता बढाउन र युवाद्वारा सञ्चालित आर्थिक वृद्धिलाई गति दिन अपरिहार्य रहेको उल्लेख गरे।

नवप्रवर्तन क्षेत्रमा निक्कीको बढ्दो भूमिकालाई उजागर गर्दै निक्कीका उपाध्यक्ष कुनाल कायलले नेपाल–भारत आर्थिक सम्बन्धको आगामी चरण निजी क्षेत्रको नेतृत्वमा र नवप्रवर्तनद्वारा प्रेरित हुनुपर्ने बताए। उनले भने, “यस गतिलाई संस्थागत गर्न हाम्रो समितिले स्टार्टअप इनोभेसन सेन्टर स्थापना प्रक्रियालाई अगाडि बढाइरहेको छ, जसले सम्पूर्ण इकोसिस्टम सरोकारवालाहरूलाई जोड्ने केन्द्रबिन्दुको रूपमा काम गर्नेछ।”

अतिथि मन्तव्य राख्दै औद्योगिक ब्यवसाय विकास प्रतिष्ठान नेपालका कार्यकारी निर्देशक इन्जिनियर उमेश कुमार गुप्ताले स्टार्टअपहरूलाई विश्वस्तरीय प्रतिस्पर्धी उद्यममा रूपान्तरण गर्न संस्थागत सहयोग, नीतिगत समन्वय तथा क्षमता विकासका सहयोगको महत्वमा जोड दिए।  

संवादको एक प्रमुख आकर्षण कोहोर्ट रिफ्लेक्सन सत्र रहेको थियो। जहाँ सहभागीहरूले आइआइटी मद्रासको आवासीय कार्यक्रमका अनुभवहरू सबैसँग साटासाटा गरे। सहभागीहरूले उच्चस्तरीय प्रयोगशाला पहुँच, लगानीकर्तासँग अन्तरक्रिया, उत्पादन परिमार्जन सहयोग तथा विश्वस्तरीय अभ्यासहरूसँग परिचित हुने अवसरबारे पनि चर्चा गरे। धेरैले यस अनुभवलाई प्रारम्भिक चरणको विकासबाट बजार–तयार नवप्रवर्तनतर्फ अघि बढ्न मद्दत गर्ने महत्वपूर्ण मोडका रूपमा वर्णन गरे।

कार्यक्रमको समापनमा मिडिया अन्तरक्रिया भयो। जसले पत्रकार र सरोकारवालाहरूलाई स्टार्टअप तथा इकोसिस्टमका अगुवाहरूसँग प्रत्यक्ष संवाद गर्ने अवसर प्रदान गरेको थियो। यसले इकोसिस्टम विकासमा पारदर्शिता र सहकार्यपूर्ण संवादको संस्कृतिलाई थप सुदृढ बनाएको छ।

सहभागीहरूको प्रशंसा गर्दै निक्कीका उपाध्यक्ष गौरव तयालले सहभागी उद्यमीहरूलाई “द्धिपक्षीय साझेदारीका पुलहरू” का रूपमा वर्णन गर्दै नेपाल र भारतबीचको नवप्रवर्तन सम्बन्ध सुदृढ बनाउन उनीहरूको भूमिकालाई उल्लेख गरे।

निक्कीले नेपाल–भारत स्टार्टअप संवाद दिगो उद्योग–शैक्षिक संस्था–सरकार तथा निजी क्षेत्रबिच सहकार्य गर्ने प्रयासको एक चरण भएको जनाएको छ। यसले नीतिगत वकालत, सीमापार साझेदारी तथा पूँजी र प्रविधिमा सुधारिएको पहुँचमार्फत स्टार्टअपहरूलाई समर्थन गर्दछ।

नेपाली उद्यमीहरूलाई भारतीय नवप्रवर्तन प्लेटफर्महरूसँग जोडेर यस पहलले ज्ञान हस्तान्तरणलाई तीव्र पार्ने, क्षेत्रीय बजार एकीकरणलाई प्रवर्द्धन गर्ने र नेपाललाई प्रविधिमा आधारित उद्यमका लागि उदाउँदो केन्द्रका रूपमा स्थापित गर्ने लक्ष्य पनि निक्कीले राखेको छ।
